Heavy quark production in γγ collisions: a theoretical reappraisal

Heavy quark production in γγ collisions is analyzed within the approach to hard collisions of photons recently proposed by the author. In this approach evaluating the cross section σ(γγ → QQ) in the “next–to–leading order of QCD” requires the inclusion of direct photon contributions up to the order αα s, whereas in the standard approach direct photon terms only up to the order ααs are taken into account. Phenomenological consequences of this difference are discussed.
